I was watching a ABC News clip on Yahoo describing companies that were profiting from the recession including McDonalds, Hershey and Liquor Stores. Wine and Liquor sales are up it proclaimed and not for celebratory reasons. Fade to a shot of the commentator sitting alone on a couch with a glass of wine positioned behind a huge bottle of cheap, Carlo Rossi wine. Doesn't this look weird? There are lots of cheap wines that come in regular sized bottles. Did they purposefully choose this bottle because it is large and would definitely not be mistaken for a more expensive vintage? Is this meant to be a sign of solidarity with the less fortunate or a subliminal message about the state of the economy?
Another odd feature is that the entire layout of the shot looks like it was thrown together. The table supporting the bottle of wine is too small to belong in front of the couch and has been turned at an angle toward the camera.
On a related note, as I was watching this clip, I received an email from Classmates asking me to renew at the incredible 75% off price of $9.95 a year. I guess they are hurting as well.
